Abstract
Tourism has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors globally,
playing a pivotal role in economic development, cultural preservation, and
employment generation. In India, tourism is not only a significant foreign
exchange earner but also a crucial catalyst for regional development. This
study explores the tourism potential of the Theni district in Tamil Nadu, an
area known for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance.
The paper presents a detailed overview of tourism in India and Tamil Nadu,
leading to an in-depth focus on the key tourist attractions of Theni including
Suruli Falls, Meghamalai, Vaigai Dam, Kumbakarai Falls, Kolukkumalai, and the
Pennycuick Memorial. Using a combination of descriptive, historical, and
analytical methodologies, this study draws upon both primary and secondary
sources to evaluate existing tourism infrastructure and suggests strategic
measures for sustainable tourism development. The findings reveal that Theni
possesses a high potential for eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and spiritual
tourism. However, to fully realize this potential, the district requires
improved connectivity, targeted promotion, investment in infrastructure, and preservation
of ecological balance. The study aims to serve as a foundational resource for
policymakers, tourism planners, and stakeholders interested in enhancing the
tourism appeal of Theni and similar semi-urban regions in Tamil Nadu.
