Career development practices and employee retention of selected public agencies in Guyana

Abstract
The study investigates career development practices and employee
retention of selected public agencies in Guyana. The quantitative design was
used. Both the convenience and purposive sampling technique was used to gather
data from 250 respondents of 3 public organizations in Georgetown with the aid
of Cochran’s (1977) formula. The Statistical Package for Social
Science version 23 was employed for data analysis. The study’s findings showed
career counseling, career planning, training, employee coaching and mentoring
and job rotation as the career development practices among public agencies in
Guyana. Findings of the study also revealed compensation, job characteristics,
training and development, supervisory support and career opportunities as some
of the factors affecting employee retention in Guyana public agencies. The
study has some implications for managers. Limitations and directions for future
study are presented.
