India has 41 DISCOMs, 106 Million registered consumers, 26,300ckt-km of cables and recorded 1160 BU of power supply during FY 2017. We are the third largest generator and the fourth largest consumer of electricity in the world. To keep such a system up-and-running is no mean feat. DISCOMs are the custodians of this and deserve commendation for the journey they have traversed for the people of India. However, overtime they have accumulated huge losses, constraining distribution firms from expanding their network to cater to the unmet demand. The following paper talks about the challenges in the Power Distribution Sector of India and how the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) is addressing them.
